Sports are a costly venture for players and teams but mostly it’s at a cost that Parents can’t afford or budget for in the mid-part of the season.
The South Delta Lightning is a girl’s fast-pitch team composed of 14 amazing young ladies all from Delta.
This dedicated and focused group of 13 year-old players, the Families and Coaches continue to strive for success to not only achieve further success, but also give back to their community in a variety of ways.
This past year alone the lightning contributed over 240 hours of volunteer work including;
* Coat drive
* Canned food drive
* Soup Kitchen
* ALS fundraiser
* Mentoring program
* Delta Special Olympics training
Instead of participating in the tradition bottle drive, the lighting (along with other South Delta teams) went door-to-door collecting canned goods for the Delta Food Bank.
The Lightning helped in the collection of 1,800 cans plus over the Easter weekend the team helped out at a soup kitchen in south Surrey.
Earlier this spring they (the Lightning) kept their promise to help sell 50/50 and raffle tickets for the ALS fundraiser, Shoot for the Cure, where $125,000 has been raised over the last 10 years.
In addition they managed to host a tournament over the same weekend.
Despite having a late Friday night then were at the fundraiser at an early hour of 7 am, prior to heading back to the park for three (3) consecutive games just so they could somehow manage to make time to take part in the fundraiser for ALS.
During pre-season the Lightning took their turn as coaches as they helped out in the South Delta Fastpitch Association’s mentoring program. The young ladies spent their Saturday mornings coaching 4-7 year olds.
During the season the Lightning joined the Delta Special Olympics team on Friday nights.
The idea quickly spread to 3 other Association and the first of its kind program was highlighted in British Columbia’s Special Olympics Magazine.
The coaches feel that this is an exceptional group of young ladies who truly understand what community is all about.
While most other teams in the league manage to recruit players from every region of southern BC; the Lightning team have a (self imposed) limit of three (3) players from outside the District.
Chances are that they might have lost of few games due to this rule, they all understand that they have an obligation to the kids in our home town and thereby give them an opportunity to play at the highest possible level they can achieve.
Other teams have names on the back of their jersey; this team has taken a completely different approach, whereby they play for our teammates and our community in which they live.
It is an attitude that they carry with us both on and off the diamond; which filters to life in general!!
They are trying to raise enough to send the team to Toronto for the National Championships and you can help make this dream a reality!
