Abuse directed at sports officials is nothing new and will continue until ALL the governing bodies of sport take a “NO ABUSE” Policy and “STICK TO THEIR GUNS”!!
I see it happen game in and game out normally on a regular basis and the main concern that it continues is simple – NO ONE HAS THE GUTS TO PUT A STOP TO IT!!
This includes ALL groups, organizations, leagues, associations and YES the Officials themselves.
Interesting concept for the officials to put a stop to it, but far too many officials allow it to happen and simply want to be “Mr. Nice Guy” and not get rid of the player(s) involved.
I see it happen from minor to Pro – yes PRO and it won’t stop at this level as they get the players union involved and complain that the player was being treated unfair. REALLY!!
If the abuse happened on the street, such as pushing, shoving and/or name calling you would be justified to call the police and press charges.
We see video’s on YouTube of Parents Gone Mad and one has to simply ask “Are Parents Ruining Youth Sports” and “WHAT MAKES PARENTS GO MAD”?
Trying to be impartial and realistic, some officials (not all) do abuse their choice of power or control when they officiate – yet others are truly in the sport for the betterment of today’s youth or some “so-called”adults.
We see parents shout, holler and scream abusive profanity at various sporting events and one has to ask if they are like this at a sporting event – what are they like at home if their Son or Daughter spills milk or the Wife is late making supper?
Do they throw things or abuse at their Family members in a manner in which to maintain control and let everyone know they are the boss?
Now we are hearing about a soccer match where racial abuse was directed at the referee who was in charge of Chelsea’s pre-season loss to Inter Milan in Singapore.
Match official Sukhbir Singh (33-year-old Sikh referee) is from Singapore and was extremely criticised for his performance in the International Champions Cup match that ended in a 2-1 defeat for Antonio Conte’s.
Match Referee Singh awarded a contentious penalty against Chelsea in first-half of added time following a challenge by Cesar Azpilicueta on Inter forward Stefan Jovetic.
Later in the match Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi saw a goal allowed that was incorrectly ruled out for offside.
During the match several individuals made racist comments about Referee Singh on social media platforms where some still remain.
Football anti-discrimination has since been contacted by members of the public that are concerned by the comments directed at the match official.
Inter took the lead in controversial fashion in first-half stoppage time as Cesar Azpilicueta was penalised for a soft challenge on Stevan Jovetic inside the box, but Jovetic saw his penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois, but hammered in the rebound scoring on the play.
Jovetic chested down the ball in the area but the former Man City man went down under the challenge and received a penalty from referee Sukhbir Singh.
Michy Batshuayi then had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside late on, but it ended 2-1 to Inter despite a late rally by the Blues.
Controversy is always going to be part of any sport and unless the governing bodies clean up the abuse it will continue.
Sad to say – but one day someone is going to die at a sporting event at the hands of an abusive parent, who is probably as spectator.
