Last Minute WIN

Tonight’s game is the first of eight between what some call the battle of Alberta, with the Barons being the farm club for the Oilers and the Heat being the farm team of the Flames. Tonight’s game see’s 2,840 fans take in the action.

This season see’s both teams in the same division and they play twice as many games against each other from last season, which saw the Heat play in the North Division last year.

The Barons being to town a two-game winning streak, having opened up the 4-game road trip winning 5-4 over Houston.

Last year the Barons won 3 of 4 games against the Heat during the first (inaugural) season, which included a win in the only game played between the clubs last year at the ASEC in February.

The Barons have young David LeNeveu playing as one of the “tenders” for the club this season and in the off-season he call’s Fernie his stomping ground.

He has played a total of 22 NHL games for Phoenix (21) and Columbus (1) and played in the 2004 AHL All-Star game in Grand Rapids during his rookie season.

He played two seasons in Cornell and broke Ken Dryden’s Cornell record for shutouts in a season managing to get 9 during the 2002-03 season. This beat Dryden’s record by 6.

He was originally selected by Phoenix in the second round (46th overall) in the2002 Entry Draft.

Other local player includes former Giant Gilbert Brule from North Vancouver and was selected by Columbus in the first round (6th overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

He managed to get to Edmonton via a trade with Columbus for Raffi Torres, July 1st, 2008.

At one point the Heat were outshooting the Barons 15-6, but somehow managed to let them back in the game getting within two shots from 25-23.

Davis for the Barons played exceptional making several close-in stops of Heat sticks and at times, stopped a game winning goal.

The Barons managed to get two goals in 27 seconds with one coming off the stick of Lowery, which was his first of his rookie season.

Abbotsford took a minor for high sticking with just over two minutes remaining putting them on the PP for what could see a game winning goal.

The Barons called a timeout with 1:07 left, but somehow manage to see the Heat miss the net thereby allowing the Barons to grab the game winning goal.
