Just Play – Stop Making Excusses
Soccer is one sport that has to look at making changes one day given the way others sports are moving forward, but don’t ask the traditionalists – cause they hate change of any type!
First the pitch is far too large for one referee, who does an exceptional job in keeping up with the play, something some hockey ref’s could learn from.
Next the game has become increasingly faster all in part due to the development of the players taking up the sport, not to mention they are becoming larger – er taller.
So this Women’s World Cup hosted by Canada is for the most part very entertaining and enjoyable to watch, regardless of who plays who.
Reflecting back do you remember the Bronze medal match of the 2010 Olympic Games when Christine Sinclair was handed a four game suspension after accusing the referee of having “decided the outcome of the match prior to it starting?’
Most Canadians still remember this and were not pleased with FIFA in handing this down, given the fact that they do what they want and the recent scandal that is on-going.
During a recent Women’s World Cup match in Edmonton two US Midfielders, Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday were given yellow cards that will cause them to be banned from the Quarterfinal match.
Both received their second yellow cards of the tournament in the win over Columbia in round 16 and this will see them miss the Quarterfinal match against China.
As with today’s sport, everyone questions the judgement of the game referee and this gets me back to my initial thought, but French Referee Stephanie Frappart made the call.
US Wamback told the media when asked why they were given out and she stated “It’s definitely a great question and I don’t know if they were yellows, but who knows?
She continued “It seemed like she was purposefully giving those yellows to the players who were sitting on yellow’s, but who really?”
If FIFA decides to just maybe do an investigation, quite possibly she (Wambach) could get a suspension, but really – do you think this will happen?
She’ll along with the US will get a slap on the wrist and tell her to keep quite and in today’s world of sport – it’s all about money.
Fan’s pay to watch the superstars play and should one get tossed out, owner/teams/countries will complain until they get what they want – to have it overturned.
So don’t expect anything from FIFA, cause they have enough problems to deal with and this will get swept under the carpet.
