Cycling is year round on Canada’s West Coast and we get privy to see some very impressive riders come the summer months, but it doesn’t end there.
Now we are hearing from Cycling Canada that there is an event in Norway in which Canadian riders proved to do very well.
The Road World Championship time trials currently being held in Bergen, Norway, wrapped up September 20th with the Elite men’s competition that saw Hugo Houle of Sainte-Perpetue, Quebec, cross the finish line in 29th position.
He was racing against a field sizable field of what some call the best professional riders in the world taking part in the 31 kilometre course.
The race finishes with a 3.4 kilometre climb to the first mountain, which is the first in the history of the World Championship races.
He placed 38th after the first time check, then managed to improve going through the second half of the course, completing the course with a time of 47 minutes and 47.61 seconds.
His next rival was a full three minutes and 6.61 seconds behind the eventual winner Tom Dumoulin who calls the Netherlands home.
Canada’s second starter was Regina’s Rob Britton who completed the race finishing 48th overall
Following the race Houle told the media “I think I did a pretty good ride, and I tried to go fast from the start as It was a pretty fast course for the two laps [before the climb], and you need to manage your effort to carry your speed.”
He continued “Then, in the last climb, all you can do is give everything you have. I’m not there with the fastest guys in the world, but I’m working on it.”
The media stayed with him and he finished off by saying “The crowds were amazing today; I think it was the biggest crowd I have ever seen. They screamed so loud that they just pushed you to the line. I think I delivered a good ride and I enjoyed the experience.”
Britton was talking to the media and mentioned “I was pretty disappointed and I think those of us who started early had the wettest conditions, so it was pretty dodgy through the corners. By the second lap it had dried up quite a bit, but overall pretty disappointed with my ride. It was a great course and I was pretty excited about it. The fans were unlike anything I have ever experienced, it was amazing.”
Overall it was a pretty amazing race for all the riders that competed.
