Sportswave had the chance to chat with Brooke Henderson the young Daughter of former coach and a former French-National Player Dave Henderson who now carries (at times) her golf bag rather than his goalie equipment.
Prior to last year’s championship at the Vancouver Golf and Country Club she was teamed up with former Vancouver Canuck goalie Cesare Manago who also played with four other clubs.
Remembering once that my Parents told me I lived in Smith Falls when I was a youngster; so good things must come from small towns, such as 18 year-old Brooke Henderson as well.
Following her “legion” of fans she made while in Vancouver last year, it’s no wonder why her fans are more loyal than ever.
She managed to capture the Women’s PGA Championship in a playoff defeating the top-ranked Lydia Ko managing a birdie on the first hole after managing to come back from a three-shot deficit on the back nine.
The number 4 ranked finished with a bogey-free 6-under 64, which was the best round of the week at the Sahalee Country Club, matching Lydia Ko at 6-under 278.
Pressure time was on the young Canadian and the par-4 18th she hit her second shot, while using a 7-iron from 155 yards.
She placed the ball to 3 feet from the pin, while Ko’s second was farther back in the fairway left her with 20 feet.
Ko missed the next shot allowing Henderson to tap in the final shot capping a week that started with a hole-in-one on
Henderson Wins
her fourth hole ending with a major championship victory.
Henderson is now the second-youngest winner in a major championship, placing Lydia Ko as the youngest last year in the Evian Championship in France.
Henderson also is the second Canadian woman to win a major championship, following Sandra Post’s victory in the 1968 event.
Henderson is expected to jump from fourth to second in the world, with her first victory last year in Portland, Oregon, prior to coming to Vancouver, where she was a fan favorite.
When asked about the rest of the summer Henderson told the media “I’m looking forward to the rest of the summer, but there are still three major championships left. I’d like to get my name on all three of those, but I won’t get ahead of myself here.”
Sportswave wishes her all the best in her long career. Move over Sandra Post!!
One thing about covering the Women’s golf is the assortment of bags used with unique club covers.
