Guelph Vs StFX – Women’s Rugby
Rugby is not one sport that is for the faint of heart and if you don’t believe this, just ask someone who has played.
It’s not only for the Men and has now evolved into a sport that welcomes Women to the game at all levels, which is exciting to watch.
From the minor level to the University level, it’s played by individuals who have a passion for the game, no different from hockey or baseball.
In a recent contest a match was played in which StFX played against the Guelph Gryphons at Centennial Stadium.
The StFX Women took an early lead in the first half over the Guelph Gryphons who are currently ranked #1 and managed to complete the upset in the second half by a score of 38-24 advancing them to the championship finals at Centennial Stadium.
The X-Women jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first six (6) minutes on key tries from June Beals and Danielle Cormier, with Sabrina McDaid hitting both converts.
StFX Head Coach Mike Cavanagh stated “We are really happy with the way we played and our forwards came to play today.”
He continued “They scrummaged and rucked well and we got the ball and tried our best to keep it because you can’t let Guelph have the ball.”
Guelph has been somewhat more dangerous than some of the team and outscored their opponents 503-12 in the OUA regular season.
They also went on to add 193 points in three (3) playoff games and another 33 against the Vikes Thursday.
This was the second straight sluggish start for the Gryphons after they allowed the Vikes jump out to an 8-0 lead in Thursday’s quarterfinal.
Both StFX’s Joanna Alphonso and Guelph’s Alexandra Everett traded tried before the half to bring the score to 19-12 for the X-Women.
The second half saw Alphonso score her third try in the 43rd minute, but a short six (6) minutes later Emily Samek (Guelph) scored two tries in two minutes to tie the game at 24-24.
Carolyn Williams scored in the 55th minute, the X-Women were awarded a penalty try in extra time and McDaid made both converts to put the game out of reach.
Sunday see’s the X-Women play Ottawa at 3:00 pm (PDT) with the Gryphons advancing to play in the bronze medal game to play Calgary.
