Football BC’s first ever visit to the Kamloops Legacy Performance Games has concluded and all indications are it was a huge success, both on and off the field.
The mini-training camp utilized a three-day event for the under-13 provincial team (U13 Team BC) and Grade 8 provincial team (Grade 8 Team BC), that concluded with intrasquad games for both teams earlier in the day.
In the U13 intrasquad game, Team Orange narrowly defeated Team Blue by a final score of 7-0.
Orange’s lone score was in the first quarter with 6:33 left when (Kelowna-Mission Lions) QB Nathan Beauchemin ran in for a major.
It appeared that Orange scored again, albeit late in the second quarter on a 10-yard rush from North Delta Longhorns RB Xavier Cole but there was a flag on the play negating the TD.
In the Grade 8 intraquad game, Team Blue knocked off Team Orange by a score of 18-8 in a game that demonstrated some tremendous offensive skill on both sides.
Blue opened the scoring after a DB Lucas Glenn (Cloverdale Minor Football) interception set up an opportunity for QB Josh Janssen (Chilliwack Giants) to hit Taran Birdi (Cloverdale Cougars) in the end zone in the opening quarter for a 6-0 lead.
A long catch-and-run late in the first quarter by Orange’s Kurtis Flynn (Chilliwack Giants) would give Owen Cheng (Victoria Spartans) a chance to punch it in on the first play of the second quarter.
Flynn would add a reception on the two-point convert to allow Orange to go up 8-6.
Blue would retake the lead at the start of the fourth quarter with Janssen hooking up with Himmat Aujla (Cloverdale Cougars) on a 48-yard catch-and-run.
Birdi, at quarterback, would find Aujla in the end zone late in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.
Glenn, who was part of the U13 roster but was promoted to play in the Grade 8 game, finished the contest with three interceptions. “We are extremely thrilled with the entire weekend,” said Football BC President Larry Reda.
“Everything from accommodations (Thompson Rivers University), the facilities (Tournament Capital Centre) as well as Hillside Stadium including the Kamloops Sports Council and Legacy Performance Games.
The volunteers have been first class and we are looking forward to returning to Kamloops again next year with our provincial team program.”
Great program for the Grade 8 boy’s and we wish them all the success moving forward.
