Published on

It’s not the only bid as others have come from Victoria and Red Deer to name only two and all would do a professional job in hosting this event, but it remains to see who will be chosen.

Vancouver Giants majority owner Ron Toigo made if official and announced his intention to submit a bid for the right to host the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup.

“We know this will be one of the most competitive bids in some time,” said Toigo, “but with the history of the CHL events we have had in the past and with right levels of support we like our chances.”
British Columbia has played host to the Memorial Cup on four occasions, two of which were in Vancouver.
The Giants were the hosts for the 2007 edition of the CHL’s national championship tournament where they won the competition, defeating the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-1 in the championship game in front of 16,281 fans at the Pacific the second largest crowd for a single game in Memorial Cup history.
The 2007 tournament also set a record for both the highest total attendance (121,461) and the highest average attendance (13,496) at a Memorial Cup.
The Western Hockey League has the opportunity to host the tournament once every three years in a rotation with the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
The Saskatoon Blades were the last WHL hosts in 2013 while the OHL’s London Knights played host this year, and the 2015 edition of the tournament is slated to take place in Quebec City in May.
