Giants 2012 Bantam Draft

The Vancouver Giants selected twelve players in today’s WHL Bantam Draft, including four Lower Mainland products.

The list includes six forwards, five defencemen and one goaltender. Two players are the sons of former long-time NHL veterans (Ty Ronning, son of Cliff, and Owen Sillinger, son of Mike).

ROUND 1

The Vancouver Giants selected Burnaby’s Ty Ronning with their first pick, 15th overall.

Ronning played last season with the Burnaby Winter Club Bantams that captured the BC and Western Canadian Championships.

He tallied 77 goals and 76 assists in 72 games played. The 5’6”, 140 lbs right winger is the son of former Vancouver Canuck, Cliff Ronning. Born: October 20, 1997.

ROUND 2

With the 37th pick, the Giants selected Jakob Stukel from Surrey, BC. The left winger is a product of Cloverdale Minor Hockey, and tallied 25 goals and 37 assists in 20 games last season.

He’s listed at 5’9” and 150 lbs, born March 6, 1997.They then traded the 40th pick to the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for their 44th overall pick and a 6th round pick, both coming later in today’s draft.

They then traded the 44th pick to the Kamloops Blazers for their 2nd Round pick in 2013 and a 4th Round selection later today.With the 42nd pick, the Giants selected Jesse Roach from Quesnel, BC.

The right winger is 6’3”, 160 lbs, born March 9, 1997, and played last season playing Bantam AA at home.

With the 85th pick (acquired earlier today in a deal with the Kamloops Blazers), the Giants selected Stefan Wornig from Surrey, BC. He’s a goaltender who stands 6’4″, 180 lbs, born March 29, 1997. He spent last season with the Semiahmoo Bantams.

ROUND 5

With the 110th pick, the Giants selected Michael Eskra from Regina, SK. He’s a defenceman listed at 5’9″, 173 lbs, born January 25, 1997.2011/12 Regina Bantam AA Oilers: 24 GP / 20 G / 17 A / 37 PTS / 68 PIM

ROUND 6

With the 117th pick, the Giants selected Kole Bryks from Edmonton, AB. He’s a 6’2″, 180 lbs defenceman, born May 2, 1997.2011/12 Edmonton KC Squires Bantam AAA: 32 GP / 10 G / 14 A / 24 PTS / 37 PIM.

And with the 132nd pick (acquired earlier today from the Edmonton Oil Kings), the Giants selected Jared Coghill from Lloydminster, AB.

He’s another big d-man, standing 6’1″, 156 lbs, born March 12, 1997.2011/12 Lloydminster Heat Bantam AAA: 32 GP / 4 G / 11 A / 15 PTS / 36 PIM

ROUND 7

And up again with the 133rd pick, the Giants selected Chase Jungels from Edina, Minnesota. A forward listed at 5’6″, 138 lbs, born February 24, 1997.2011/12 Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School: 25 GP / 11 G / 7 A / 18 PTS / 12 PIM With the 147th overall pick, the Giants selected Colten Iron from Canoe Narrows, SK. He’s a 6’2″, 179 lbs right winger, born January 15, 1997.2011/12 Battleford Barons Bantam AA: 22 GP / 35 G / 19 A / 54 PTS / 10 PIM

ROUND 8

The 169th overall selection was used to pick Jordan Klehr from Lino Lakes, Minnesota. The 5’9″, 155 lbs defenceman was born March 18, 1997. He’s a product of Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

ROUND 9

The Giants selected Mitch Stapley 191st overall from North Vancouver. He’s a 5’8″, 155 lbs blueliner, born March 20, 1997. He played last season with the NSWC Bantams.

ROUND 10

The Giants selected Owen Sillinger, son of NHL veteran Mike Sillinger, 199th overall with their final pick of the 2012 Bantam Draft.

The Regina native is 5’2″, 120 lbs, and was born on September 23, 1997.
