Fraser Valley Championship
The Fraser Valley championship final is set while another two teams punched their tickets to the provincial tournament in less than three weeks time.
Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Ravens will battle Surrey’s Holy Cross Crusaders on Sunday night at Langley Events Centre in the championship final for the Fraser Valley 4A senior boys championships.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Ravens exploded in the second period for 28 points while holding the W.J. Mouat (Abbotsford) Hawks to 11 points to take an insurmountable 50-28 half-time lead.
Terry Fox, the top seed coming into the 24-team championships, pulled away for the 89-57 win over the No. 5 Hawks in the first of the two semi-finals on Thursday night, also at Langley Events Centre.
Terry Fox used a balanced attack with five players reaching double digits. Jacob Mand and Grady Stanyer led the way with 17 points apiece.
Jevan Uppal had a game-high 18 points for the Hawks.
The latter semifinal saw the No. 3 Crusaders up 47-46 at the half over the No. 2 Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers before extending their lead to seven points with one quarter to go.
The Panthers were never able to get within more than six points the rest of the way with Holy Cross prevailing 105-93.
The Crusaders sunk 14 three-pointers in the game and then closed it out from the free-throw line, hitting 12 of their 17 foul shots in the fourth quarter. Uyi Ologhola led the Crusaders with 26 points while Brent Padilla had 25, with 23 of those coming in the second half.
For the Panthers, it was Arjun Samra with 26 points and Austin Swedish with 25.
Terry Fox will now play Holy Cross on Sunday at 8 p.m. on Centre Court at Langley Events Centre.
There will be three other games on Sunday at LEC as well, with all three tipping off at 6pm.
On Centre Court, Lord Tweedmuir will play Mouat for third place, while the Centennial Centaurs face the Walnut Grove Gators in the fifth/sixth place game on the Fieldhouse Court and on the South Court, the Guildford Park Sabres face the Heritage Woods Kodiaks.
While the Centaurs and Gators clinched their berths to the provincial tournament with victories on Thursday, only one Fraser Valley spot remains between the Sabres and the Kodiaks.
Guildford Park is looking at earning the school’s first-ever berth to the provincial tournament and the team – seeded No. 12 – is coming off a heart-breaking 80-78 loss to Centennial, which earned their first provincial berth in 10 years.
The Sabres face the No. 7 Kodiaks, who fell 95-73 to Walnut Grove.
