Football Canada Cup Kicks-Off
Saskatoon is set to host 8 teams from 7 provinces in the 2014 Football Canada Cup from Sunday July 6 to Saturday July 12 at University of Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium.
Four of the last five CIS Rookie of the Year Award winners are alumni of the Canada Cup. Last year’s recipient, Danny Vandervoort (McMaster) participated with Ontario East in 2011. 2012 recipient, Shaquille Johnson (McGill) participated with Ontario West in 2010 as well as in 2008 in the U17 division, 2011 winner Tyler Varga (Western) participated with Ontario West in 2010 while 2009 winner Linden Gaydosh (Calgary) participated with North Alberta in the 2007 U17 division.
Additional alumni include Ben Heenan, Israel Idonije, Kirby Fabien, Andy Fantuz, Dan McCullough, Jason Pottinger and Matt Walter.
The tournament consists of three game days in a seven day span. The first game day on Sunday July 6 is critical as those that win on opening day finish no lower than 4th while those that lose move into the consolation bracket.
Day one’s action begins at 10 AM as three-time defending silver medalist Alberta take on last year’s tournament host, New Brunswick.
At 1 PM three-time defending champion, Québec faces Saskatchewan (white) while at 4 PM Nova Scotia faces defending bronze medalist Ontario. To cap off the first game day, Manitoba faces host Saskatchewan (green) at 7:30 PM. (Note: all times are local)
On day two, the consolation bracket opens the day with games at 10 AM and 1 PM while the opening day’s winners battle in semi-final showdowns at 4 and 7 PM respectively.
When the dust clears, the tournament’s two undefeated teams will play for gold on Saturday July 12 at 7 PM.
