Golf Canada has announced that Team Canada member Eugene Wong of Vancouver has been granted an exemption to compete in the 2011 RBC Canadian Open, July 18-24 at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver.
The 20-year old Vancouver native and University of Oregon junior is a former B.C. Amateur champion, B.C. Junior champion and runner up at the Canadian Men’s Amateur.
In 2010, he won the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award which earned him an exemption into the recent 2011 Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour.
Wong will join fellow Team Canada member Albin Choi of Toronto in the field for Canada’s National Open Championship.
Choi, a sophomore at N.C. State, earned his exemption last summer by winning the 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship.
It’s never easy for any young athlete to excel in sports, but when they do, it say’s a lot about the province they come from and in this case – it’s BC.
