EARLY LEAD SLIPS AWAY

A two-run home run off the bat of Eugene LF Yale Rosen in the bottom of the 8th inning stopped the Canadians winning ways at four games as the Emeralds topped Vancouver 4-2 on Thursday night.  The loss combined with a Tri-City victory pulls the two North division rivals even with just four regular season games remaining.

Vancouver opened the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning when Emeralds starter RHP Walker Weickel gave up a single to Canadians RF Boomer Collins who would proceed to steal second base and later score on a double from 3B Richard Urena.

The Canadians would extend the lead to 2-0 when DH Tim Locastro was hit by a Weickel pitch, stole second base, advanced to third on a fly out off the bat of SS Franklin Barreto and scored on a 1B Ryan McBroom sacrifice fly.

It would be the last run the Canadians would generate on the night.

Eugene would score four unanswered including three off of Canadians reliever RHP Andrew Case who struggled in the loss, his first of the season.

Case would allow three runs on five hits which included a towering two-run home run from LF Yale Rosen to give the Emeralds the victory, the first of this series which wraps up Friday, August 29th at 7:00pm.

Vancouver (42-30) will send RHP Jonathan Wandling (1-0, 6.00) to the mound against Eugene RHP Mike Kelly (7-4, 4.01) in the final game of this five-game series.

Notes:  The Canadians are 7-2 (.727) against Eugene in nine (9) head-to-head meetings this summer…  Vancouver is 0-1 against RHP Mike Kelly who pitched five innings of scoreless baseball in Vancouver allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking three.

Vancouver finishes the season with one final road game in Eugene before returning home to face Spokane (Aug 30-Sept 1) and are currently 3-6 (.333) against the Indians in 2014.

Tri-City wraps up a five-game series against the Hops on Friday and are 5-4 vs. Hillsboro in nine meetings this summer.

Tri-City remains at home for the final series of the summer against Everett who in nine head-to-head meetings are 5-4 (.555)

Should the Canadians tie Tri-City for the North Division lead after 38 home dates, Vancouver holds the second half tiebreaker and would advance to face Spokane in the North Division Playoffs.

Canadians SS Franklin Barreto was 1-for-3 on Thursday managing his 88th hit of the season.
