A short year ago Nic Petan’s Parents Rosanna and Franc Petan watched from home (Delta BC) as Nic competed at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship.
In the midst of a move from Surrey to Delta, they had friends meet at their Family Restaurant, which was around 4 AM, cheering Nic as he managed to get five points for Canada.
Nic’s Mother Rosanna stated “We watched the games live, then watch them again when they’d be replayed or we’d just tape it and watch it again later, or even just listen.”
Following a visit with Alex (their older son), who plays for Michigan Tech University, they picked up an audio feed of Canada’s game against Slovakia on their flight home from Detroit.
While making their way to baggage claim in Seattle and still listening to the game, Nic scored with less than three minutes to play in the third giving Canada a 4-3 lead.
Just over a minute-and-a-half later, he managed to add the insurance marker into an empty net and as any proud Parent and in the airport “we just screamed when he scored.”
This time they will be cheering and watching at the Bell Centre in Montreal, north of the 49th.
Rosanna told the media “I’m definitely more excited it being here in Canada and my husband and me going and we are so pumped to see it live. I think Nic’s pretty happy that we’re going to be there this year.”
Nic play a short five (5) hours south with the Portland Winterhawks and his Parents manage to watch him play in one of the other locations nearby.
These include Cities such as Vancouver, Seattle and Everett, as well as attending various high-performance camps and competitions.
Not too surprising as have all Parents of the players, they have become familiar with the Families of other Team Canada players.
“It’s great meeting all the parents and how we all stand together,” says Rosanna. “We’re all there for the same reason, rooting on our kids.”
But even after all those games watching from the stands isn’t any easier, on either Mom or Dad.
Great to see a young person from Delta advance his career up from Minor to Pro and Sportswave wishes him all the best.
