Sidney’s career continued to grow and excel at a record pace with many wondering if there is any end to his career that has helped grow the game for today’s youth.

The contract reportedly would have paid him $2.5 million annually plus an additional $2 million payout regardless of whether the WHA was realized as a legitimate league. 

No one really understood how the City of Hamilton could have signed Crosby, as Toronto held his WHA playing rights, but regardless the WHA never took off as it had in the 70ties.

He returned to the  Océanic finishing with 66 goals, 102 assists for 168 points over his 62 games played capturing his second consecutive Beliveau Trophy.

He was positioning for the 2005 draft was conducted via a weighted lottery based on each team’s playoff appearances and draft lottery victories in the last four years. This lottery system led to the draft being popularly referred to as the “Sidney Crosby Lottery” or the “Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes”

He eventually made his NHL debut October 5/2005 against New Jersey managing to register an assist on the team’s first goal of the season, scored by Kamloops resident Mark Recchi in a 5–1 loss.

Mark played in the BCJHL for the Langley Eagles (84-85) followed by two seasons with the New West Bruins then moved up to the level he was touted to play in the NHL.

He scored his first NHL goal in the Penguins’ home opener on October 8 against goaltender Hannu Toivonen of the Boston Bruins.

Becoming the youngest player in the history of the World Junior championships to score a goal in the tournament and returned to the Quebec league for his second year and scored 66 goals cementing status as the best young prospect in the world drawing comparisons to NHL all-time greats such as Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr.

He was named the youngest captain in the NHL carrying the torch from teammate Mario Lemieux leading the Penguins to 3 Stanley Cup titles along the way in 2009, as well back-to-back titles in 2016, and 2017.

 Crosby went on to become the youngest player in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy for the scoring championship, as well as the youngest to win the Hart Trophy for league MVP and hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2009 leading the Penguins to the League championship.

In addition to the Stanley Cup championship the following year  he led Canada to the 2010 Gold medal in Hockey in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Crosby’s career continues to grow and there is no end in sight to his career wrapping up in the near future and for someone coming from small-town Canada, it’s great to see his passion for the game and today’s youth.
