Not long after they retired the number (81) for Geroy Simon, the BC Lions continue to show that they are professional both on and off the field.
Team president and CEO Dennis Skulsky announced that the BC Lions Football Club will officially retire the jersey numbers worn by both Brent Johnson and Jamie Taras.
I think both players were caught off guard with this as they clearly did not see this coming from the Lions organization.
“We’re not only taking this step to honour these two former outstanding players, but we want to also ensure there is consistency among all of our Ring of Honour inductees,” said Skulsky. Retiring Jamie’s number 60 and Brent’s number 97 is a fitting tribute to these men for their contributions to our club.”
The Lions will recognize the retirement of numbers 97 and 60 during a pregame ceremony on September 19th when the Toronto Argonauts take on the Leos at BC Place.
Taras who played 16 seasons for the Lions told the media “I am very thankful to both Dennis Skulsky and to owner David Braley for this amazing news.
He also made 264 appearances as well as Grey Cup championships in 1994 and 2000 and Taras continued “It’s huge surprise, an even bigger honour and something that my family and I will cherish always.”
“It was a tremendous privilege to play for the Lions and to be associated with men like Wally Buono, David Braley and Dennis Skulsky,” said Brent Johnson a two-time Grey Cup champion and former CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
“Having your number retired is a feeling not easily summed up by words. I’m humbled and honoured by the gesture and I can’t begin to describe the pride it gives me.”
Next BC Lions home game is Friday, August 8th versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at 7:00 pm.
