Christine Sinclair Ties National Record

Burnaby’s Christine Sinclair tied her own national record with the 16th goal of the international season in a 2 nil win this past weekend.

Sinclair and Diana Matheson were the goal scorers in the 14 July in the opening match at the Match world Women’s Cup 2012. The game was played in New Zealand.

“It was a really strong performance,” said Canadian head coach John Herdman. “They took a couple of steps today. They were really resolute to sticking to certain things to which they said they would.”

At Stade de Lussy in Chatel-St.-Denis, Switzerland, Sophie Schmidt was the player of the match, with assists on both the Matheson and Sinclair goals.

Sinclair was playing in her 39th consecutive match, the fifth-longest streak in Association history.

All four teams competing in the Match world Women’s Cup are preparing for the London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

With 16 goals in 2012, Sinclair ties the national record she set in 2007. Sinclair now has 136 career goals in 183 international matches.

Canada’s women’s national team will train in Switzerland from 5-18 July.

The team then travels to England where, after two days in London, it will be based in Coventry for its first to London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament matches.

Canada plays 25 July against Japan, South Africa on 28 July, and Sweden (in Newcastle) on 31 July.
