Moving players out is not just hard for the player, but also the team especially if they have had close connections with the team, the city and the community.

Having them stay around only helps grow the product for the fan base as well as the youth that either attend the games and quite possibly aspire to become a future member of their home club.

Such was the case with Kingston Jamaica’s Javain Brown (22) who has recently signed a new contract with the Whitecaps and agreed to a new contract which runs through the 2024 Soccer season with an option for the 2025 season.

He was instrumental in leading them in 40 tackles and finished second in the teams interceptions (45) in regular season play managing 5 assists in his 19 starts.

This includes his 26 appearances in MLS play, which includes playoffs, as well as having one start in a Canadian Championship match.

Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC Sporting Director mentioned “We are very pleased to extend Javain’s contract and at the same time reward him for a successful first year in MLS.”

Schuster continued “He is a great example and reference of encouragement for our 2022 SuperDraft selections and throughout last season, Javain worked hard, stayed humble, and improved along the way. We look forward to helping him continue his growth as a member of our club.”

Brown was used on either side of the pitch as a fullback or wing-back and we shouldn’t forget that he was selected 23rd overall by the Cap’s first overall in the 2021 Superdraft, eventually signing in mid February.

On the international stage he managed four caps in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying last year, while playing in three International “friendlies” in both 2018 and one in 2017.

Stats about Javain:

  • 20 starts in 27 appearances for Whitecaps FC across all competitions in 2021
  • Tied for seventh most assists amongst defenders in MLS during 2021 with five
  • Eight caps earned with Jamaican men’s national team, including four in 2021

Brown mentioned “I’m grateful to both the city of Vancouver and the Whitecaps organization for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to the future and I am excited to help bring a trophy to this city.”

Prior to his pro career in 2019 he was named to the First Team All-Star American Athletic Conference First Team All-Conference and All-Rookie Team and had 31 starts and 32 appearances in the Jamaican Premier League with Harbor View FC
