The Vancouver Whitecaps FC2 pull off an impressive 3-0 win in their home opener of a Cascadia Match against their rivals, the Seattle Sounders FC2 squad at Langley’s McLeod Stadium in front of 738 fans.
Vancouver opened the scoring in the 13th minute as 3rd year veteran took a passes from first year player Francis de Vries to blasting home the games opening goal past a startled Sounders keeper Tyler Miller.
Seattle found their legs midway through the opening half using their speed and youth creating chance after chance against the Caps being awarded a half dozen corner kicks but the defense turned the Sounders away with Spencer Richey coming up with a key stops preserving the shutout.
Vancouver continued to play sound soccer with every player getting a touch of the ball in the first half creating numerous problems for the Sounders defense coming close to expanding the lead with a pair of chances late in the half taking a 1 nil lead to the half.
The second half saw Seattle play a better half than in the opening half using the ground attack with several one time touches passes spreading the Whitecaps creating excellent chances allowing Seattle to get back into the match.
Vancouver adjusted getting their momentum late in the second half with timely substitutions offering Seattle chances at key subs making the game far more entertaining for the fans in attendance.
Caps “keeper” Spencer Richey was forced to punch the ball away from the aggressive play of sounders not once but twice in the second half stopping Zack Mathews and Seyi Adekoya of a set of corner kicks heading into the final minutes of play.
Vancouver solidified the win late in the second half when Substitute Andy Thoma scored in the 86th minute after a cross from Gloire Amada sending it past Tyler Miller giving Vancouver the 2-0 lead.
The Caps managed to get one more in extra time (94th minute) of extra time with Ben McKendry sending a cross from veteran Will Seymore blasting it home to make the final a 3-0 Caps win their first of the year.
Seattle Sounders entered the match after splitting their first two games at home coming into today’s match and falling to a 1-2 record on the season.
Vancouver’s next outing see’s them visit Portland in Providence Park taking on the Timbers in a key Cascadia match then returning home April 22nd for a match against San Antonio FC at Thunderbird Stadium at 3 pm.
