Buta Johal’s journey from Punjab, India, to Vancouver, BC, in 1997 marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
Leaving behind his homeland meant bidding farewell to cherished possessions, including his beloved tractors.
Yet, amidst the challenges of immigration and adaptation, Johal’s passion for farming machinery endured.
As technology advanced over the years, Johal embraced opportunities for personal and professional growth.
However, in 2016, a nostalgic longing stirred within him, prompting a rekindling of his affection for tractors.
He embarked on a unique endeavor, importing his first tractor, a Ford 3600, to Canada. Transforming it into a luxurious vehicle, Johal merged practicality with sentimentality.
Undeterred by the complexities of importing and customizing, Johal’s enthusiasm only grew.
The subsequent years saw the arrival and transformation of additional tractors, including a Massey Ferguson and a 1936 Fordson Tractor acquired locally in 2021.
His collection expanded further with the purchase and import of a 1950 CASE Tractor, a New Holland, and an HMT 5911 from India later that same year.
Johal’s passion transcended mere ownership; it became a source of joy and community engagement.
In 2011, he joined many other fans just like him, driving his Jeep to Fraser and 49th after every Canucks playoff victory.
Thirteen years on, Johal’s ritual evolved as he now parades his tractors through downtown Vancouver before every playoff game, regardless of location, delighting Canucks fans and residents alike.
Reflecting on the heartwarming response to his tractor parades, Johal shared, “I go around downtown, I take the tractors, the people love it, the neighbours love it, it makes me very happy to see how people react.”
His mission to spread joy through his cherished tractors encapsulates the spirit of community and camaraderie synonymous with Canucks fandom.
For Johal, this tradition is more than a pastime; it’s a testament to his enduring connection to his roots and his adopted home.
With each spirited parade, he fosters a sense of unity and pride among Canucks supporters, hoping to continue this tradition for as long as the team graces the playoffs.
