Canadians On Top
The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club is proud to announce that infielder Franklin Barreto has been named Baseball America Player of the Year (Class-A, Short-Season).
Barreto, 18, re-wrote the Canadians record books in 2014 setting franchise marks in doubles, runs scored, runs batted in and hits while ranking in the top three in four other statistical categories.
We couldn’t be prouder of how he handled himself on the diamond all season long and this acknowledgement by Baseball America is very well deserved,” stated Canadians manager John Schneider.
Barreto was named the 2014 Vancouver Canadians Most Valuable Player as well as Offensive Co-Player of the Year (Ryan McBroom) after hitting .311 (90-for-289) with 23 doubles, six home runs and 61 runs batted in.
The Venezuelan native also had hits in each of the Canadians four playoff games going 5-for-18 (.278) with one RBI.
Canadians LHP Jairo Labourt was also acknowledged by Baseball America as a Class-A, Short-Season All-Star after going 5-3 with a Northwest League leading 1.77 earned run average over his 15 starts for Vancouver.
“Jairo made every start this past summer and when we needed wins coming down the stretch, he was dominant over is final few outings including the victory he picked up over Spokane in the post-season. He had an impressive year,” added Schneider.
