Sportswave continues to cover the annual Canada Cup with this year marking year number 24 with a record number of up and coming teams attending from around the globe.
True there are not the major powerhouse teams such as Japan, United States and Australia as we are used to seeing at Softball City, but that is due to them attending the World Softball Championship.
The event has been a huge success and given the fact that we have the luxury of watching either Olympic or future Olympic Athletes the price you pay for admission is well with the it.
Players, Coaches, Trainers and hundreds of volunteers make this event a world class event and given it’s 24 year history is it any wonder why it’s continues to grow.
One area that is impressive and well used is the set up for the first aid trailer and given the continual trips made by players and yes even coaches, it’s a

“hot commodity” and well received, so congratulations are in order for those working in the trailer.
Volunteers are the unsung heroes of the event and do a remarkable job in all areas of the diamond and are continually fielded with numerous questions, none of which are too outrageous for them to answer, cause believe it or not – they have the answer.
Volunteers number in excess of 300 and you can only imagine the number of hours they log and in recent conversation with a couple, they mentioned “its long day’s, but regardless they are rewarding”, so you can’t ask for more than that.
One area of concern for the event is the issue of parking as located behind the outfield is the construction for a new indoor soccer facility for the public, with no end in sight.
The other area of concern which I have been asked about is the ability for some to get to the upstairs Extra Innings Restaurant as there are only steps to climb, with nothing in place for wheelchair access.
This alone shocks me and I know that quite possibly building codes have changed since it was initially built, but regardless it’s time for the City of Surrey to round the bases and score a “home run” and make the necessary changes.
The facility and the Canada Cup have lots of interaction on hand, but most or all is only located at the main entrance across from the South Surrey Arena, but abruptly stops near the steps due to the layout of the grounds.
Overall the Canada Cup is well worth the trip out to Softball City in South Surrey to not only enjoy the surroundings, but also be entertained by some exceptional International future Olympic Athletes.
