Canada Advances To Gold Final
A short four years after winning in Vancouver on home ice, the Canadians have advanced to the Gold final game that will see them take on a power-house team from Sweden.
Winning by a narrow score of 1-0 on a goal from Victoria’s Jamie Benn who wasn’t on the roster in 2010, but he clearly has made the difference on this day.
Both Benn and Price played exceptional and one would think that Head Coach Mike Babcock felt at ease in starting Price over the one that took the team to Gold in Vancouver – Roberto Luongo.
While Crosby wasn’t on the score sheet and everyone is wondering why, he played solid in both ends of the ice, creating several chances, just unable to get one past any tender he faced.
Canada is guaranteed either Gold or Silver in the final and this is the first time that Canada has won a medal in an Olympics that have been held outside of North America since NHL players began taking part dating back to 1998.
It wasn’t until the second period that Canada got on the board, after a heads-up play from Bouwmeester who held the puck above the left face-off circle all the time waiting Victoria’s Jamie Benn to get open for the pass.
This was the very first time that Orpik and Carlson were playing together in these Olympics all due to a hand injury to Paul Martin.
A perfect pass from Bouwmeester hit Benn’s stick right and he knew exactly what to do and a simple and deflection past King’s netminder Jonathan Quick getting on the scoreboard at the 1:41 of the second.
While the Russian team was eliminated it never stopped Alex Ovechkin to leave the games, not did it force him to take the first charter back to North America.
His father underwent heart surgery, so he stayed by his side and eventually send a tweet out stating “Thanks to all for support. My dad going to be good and he see you all again.”
As we would expect in a game on this style the stadium was full and all 11,172 fans were thrilled to watch this entertaining game.
The US will play for the Bronze Medal against Finland, who somehow managed to lose to the Swedes by a narrow tight checking score of 2-1 in the other semi-final.
While the game is played on the ice, we have to give much credit to the Coaching staff for putting this squad together as the choice wasn’t easy for anyone.
GO CANADA GO!!!
