Laird and I have traveled around the world and while we had a great time, we did see several throughout our travels that in need of either medication or treatment from a Doctor or a Specialist.
In some areas this is not as easy as we might think and while our medical system is in place, it’s not with far too many problems that we think will go away, but that’s for another story.
After the Police and Fire Games were in Burnaby, Laird was no where to be found and that was not like him as we spoke on a regular basis, but not this time.
Shortly after a few day’s went by, I was contacted by a good friend of ours John Buis who told me that Laird was in the Hospital and not able to take calls or see visitors.
Time after time I tried to contact him and finally I found out he was in Royal Columbian and had underwent open Heart Surgery, not just any surgery, but a quadruple by-pass.
Well he is a fighter and pulled through it, but nothing is easy and while we still cover several events, we have to take our time to rest so he can have some R & R, which is only fitting.
This past weekend we covered the CP Women’s Open at the Vancouver Golf Club where the staff were exceptional as well as all the 1,075 Volunteers working there.
I lost him for a while and found out where he went and here is his story as to why he left me looking after the lawn chair for a while, but all was not in vain.
Lairds Story:
During this tournament, real life transcended sport by bringing to the forefront the battle against heart disease.
Heart disease is the number one killer worldwide and is the number one killer of men and women in North America.
It also is a killer of children!!!!
The “Birdies for Heart” …was set up for the 17th hole with CP donating $5000 for each birdie that saw CP present a cheque for $1.2 million to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation during the closing ceremonies of the event.
I am a survivor of heart disease and open heart surgery and I support this cause whole heartily (excuse the pun).
My recovery allowed me to be on the course over the tournament and capture these special athletes in their element. I am a financial supporter and ask all to donate any amount to fight this cause.
