BC 4 Soccer Provincials

The action gets underway at 930am with the U21 Women’s Championship game, an all-Metro Women’s Soccer League final between Dashmesh United and Pitt Meadows Shock.

The day concludes at 4pm with the Men’s Provincial A Cup final between Surrey United Firefighters and Delta United Hurricanes, both of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League.

That game will likely feature a number of former Whitecaps FC and Canadian Internationals including Jeff Clarke, Steve Kindel and Niall Thompson of Surrey United and, Cam Hundal, the Delta United Hurricanes freshman from UVic who was named CIS 2011 Rookie of the year and 2011 CIS National Championship Tournament MVP.

Cam was also recently named to the Whitecaps FC PDL roster for the 2012 season. Laurie Robertson, President of the Metro Women’s Soccer League who are also hosting this weekend’s finals said,

“This weekend is the culmination of a great season of adult soccer across BC and we encourage fans to come along to watch and be part of what will be a fantastic day. Metro Women’s Soccer League is honoured to host the event and wish all the competing teams the best as they strive for Provincial Cup glory”.

West Van FC, the defending British Columbia and Western Canadian Masters Soccer Champions face league rivals Westside FC in the Masters Cup Final which kicks off at 11am. Westside FC will be captained by Colin Pettingale, one of a unique group of players who has won Provincial Cup winner’s medals in youth, senior men’s and master’s competitions.

Surrey United FC will have three teams participating in this Saturday’s cup finals. As well as their men’s team featuring in the A Cup final, their Women’s team will be hoping to win their 9th Provincial A Cup Championship in a row and extend their 31 match winning streak in Provincial Cup games.

The 2011 Sport BC ‘Team of the Year’ will feature former national team player Katie Thorlakson.

However they will face a tough test against league rival Columbus FC in a 130pm kick off.

Columbus FC, formerly Burnaby Canadians, joined the famous Vancouver club at the start of the 2011-12 season, the first time ever that the 60 year old Columbus club had fielded a women’s team. The Columbus team is captained by former SFU co-captain Jessica Fleming and their keeper is Cassie Newbrook, former SFU co-captain and 4 year standout who was NAIA All American in 2007 and 2009 seasons.

Surrey United Women’s Classics team feature in a 230pm final against Gorge FC of the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association, undefeated in league and cup play this season.

NVFC Campobasso of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League will play Surrey FC Coyotes of the Fraser Valley Soccer League in the Men’s B Cup Final at 3pm.

NVFC Campobasso were formed in 2009 with Campbasso being the capital city of the southern region of Molise, Italy.

The team’s founders all had ties to this region and when establishing the club, wanted to pay tribute to their heritage.

In the Women’s B Cup Final at 12noon, there will be an all-Metro Women’s Soccer League showdown between Aldergrove Adrenaline and North Shore Girls SC Impact.

The Men’s U21 Cup final at 1230pm will feature defending champions, Victoria Highlanders of the Vancouver Island Soccer League and Port Moody Gunners of the Fraser Valley Men’s League.

The Gunners team is made up of players that played their youth soccer in the Tri-Cities area and the well-established U21 program has been a feeder system for their Premier and Div. 1 teams.

The Highlanders team acts as a development program for players participating in the PDL and Pacific Coast League during the summer.

Carl Valentine, Whitecaps FC club ambassador, along with members of the ‘Caps women’s team will be on-site showing their support, presenting awards to the tournament’s winning teams, as well as meeting local soccer fans.

“This Senior Provincial Championships is always a great weekend of soccer.  .
