announced this afternoon that offensive tackle Ben Archibald has informed the club of his intention to retire.

Archibald spent three seasons with the Lions, never missing a game from his left tackle position after signing as a free agent in 2011.

Coming over from Calgary where the Tacoma, Washington native starred for three seasons (2008, 2009, 2010),

Archibald ultimately earned four West Division All-Star nods (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012) along with two All-Canadian selections (2009, 2010).

In total, he played in 102 regular season games (54 with BC), six playoff games and two Grey Cup championships, winning with Calgary in 2008 and with the Leos in 2011.

“Ben brought a quiet professionalism to the BC Lions and he was a great example of the complete player; good on the field, good in the dressing room and a great role model as a husband, father and teammate,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “We wish him and his family the very best in the future.”

Archibald told the media “I was very blessed to enjoy a great CFL career and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have played for two great organizations in both Calgary and BC and will always treasure the memories from my time in the CFL.”

The BC Lions also announced that Anton McKenzie (linebacker) has been released from the roster.

McKenzie spent five seasons in orange appearing in 69 regular season games preceded by three seasons (30 games) as a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The two-time West Division All-Star (2008, 2009) and 2008 All-Canadian registered a total of 310 defensive tackles and 12 sacks as a member of the Lions. He also earned Grey Cup rings as ‘Rider in 2007 and with BC in 2011.

“Anton gave everything he had each and every time he had the opportunity to do so,” said head coach Mike Benevides. “He has a very bright future ahead of him and we’re grateful for his services as a Lion.”
