SFU Winter Classic

The UBC T-birds Men’s hockey team went undefeated in the Simon Fraser Winter Classic Hockey tournament over the weekend prior to celebrating 2013.
The four team event featured Simon Fraser (host), UBC, Oklahoma Sooners and the Arizona Sun Devils face-off in NCAA action over  Fridays games saw UBC defeat Arizona 8-2 and the late game saw SFU shutout Oklahoma 4-0.
Saturday’s first game saw UBC defeat Oklahoma 4-3 in overtime and the top ranked Sun Devils narrowly down SFU 5-3.
The event was to promote NCAA hockey as well as promote the respective schools to those on hand and show what they have to offer those attending.
The on-ice product was exceptional with all four teams put on a great show as well as strongly promotes education or scholastic marks as part of their programs.
It is hoped that several players might take advantage of the opportunities offered to them in their decisions to expand their scholastic achievements to decide what is best suited for them. All four schools have an impressive record of scholastic programs and Ross Beebe of Global Hockey expanded this on several one-on-one meeting with several attending the event.

Ross explained to us “Having people from the Universities in attendance to talk to the players who are looking recruitment and giving advice to those looking for answers to expand their education and enjoy playing hockey is best for the players.” As well the four coaching staffs SFU, UBC, Arizona, and Oklahoma also took part in the seminar series to discuss what they are looking for players in their programs which was an eye opener for the young players on hand from the Burnaby Bantam Hockey tournament taking place the 50th anniversary for the organization.

A total of 17 teams entered in this week long tournament with lot’s of upcoming young talent on display.

It is hoped that this event will take place again this year as it is obviously an eye-opener for those planning on entering University, regardless of where they attend.
