In keeping up with the news of the Vancouver Canadians we wanted to share the recent press release from Tyler Zickle, media relations/broadcaster for the C’s and good friend of Sportswave.

The Canadians broke their mini two-game losing streak with a well-earned 3-2 win over the Eugene Emeralds [SF] at PK Park on Saturday evening.

Starters Rafael Sanchez (W, 5-1) and Manuel Mercedes were dealing early on in this one, with each recording six strikeouts over three scoreless innings.

The Exploding Whales – Eugene’s alternate identity for the night – got on the board first in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a walk and two hits.

As we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in the second half, the C’s responded quickly to the deficit.

After Je’Von Ward walked to start the inning, Peyton Williams crushed a line drive that bounced over the right field wall for a rulebook double. 

A pop out followed, but the stage was set for Robert Brooks with two outs. After scoring the only two runs for the C’s over the last two games, the Marietta, GA native delivered a go-ahead, three-run home run to left field to make the game 3-2. It proved to be the game winner.

With Sanchez battling a high pitch count through five innings, the C’s turned to Chay Yeager (H, 6) for the sixth. After putting the first two batters on, the right-hander struck out the next man before inducing an inning-ending double play.

Grayson Thurman (H, 6) followed, allowing two hits over two innings while striking out two. Jonathan Lavallee (S, 3) entered for the ninth and struck out the side to earn his third save of the year.

With the win, the C’s move to 15-5 in the second half while Eugene falls to 10-10. 

The series wraps up tomorrow at 4:05 from PK Park with Pat Gallagher (3-4, 4.86) toeing the slab for Vancouver and Cesar Perdomo (1-1, 3.14) on the mound for the Emeralds.

With last night’s win, the C’s improve to 5-6 against the Giants affiliate this season. This afternoon’s game will be the last that the Canadians will play in Eugene this year. 

The Emeralds will visit Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver for two series towards the end of the season: August 6-11 and September 3-8. CREAM OF THE CROP: Vancouver has four MLB.com Top 30 Blue Jays prospects on the roster: #10 LHP Kendry Rojas, #17 RHP Juaron Watts-Brown, #21 OF Jace Bohrofen and #25 Dasan Brown.

The Emeralds have seven Top 30 Giants prospects on the roster: #2 1B Bryce Eldridge, #10 LHP Joe Whitman, #14 SS Aeverson Arteaga, #18 INF Diego Velasquez, #24 C Onil Perez, #25 SS Cole Foster, #27 OF Jonah Cox 

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 

On July 14th, 1994, Blue Jays World Series hero Joe Carter appears in a game with the front of his jersey displaying ‘TOROTNO’ instead of ‘TORONTO’. 

He went six whole innings without anybody noticing the typo. Jersey manufacturer Wilson was deemed to be the culprit for the mistake. 

AROUND THE NEST: 

Only three runs were scored around the Blue Jays system on Saturday: The Blue Jays were thumped by the Diamondbacks 12-1; Triple-A Buffalo lost their fourth straight game to Lehigh Valley 7-2; 

Double-A New Hampshire lost their 5th straight 4-0 to Binghampton; Single-A Dunedin was shut out by Tampa for the second consecutive game, 10-0. ALUMNI REPORT: Alan Roden (23′) continues to heat up for Triple-A Buffalo, collecting three hits in yesterday’s 7-2 loss, including two doubles. 

The former Creighton Blue Jay slashed .327/.437/.459 for the Canadians in 2023, earning himself a call-up to Double-A by mid-July. 

COLUMBUS STATE’S FINEST: 

Robert Brooks continued to stay hot for the C’s, mashing a three run, go ahead home run that proved to be the difference in last night’s 3-2 win. 

It was Brooks’ third home run of the season and second of the series after going deep back in game two. It’s also the 14th game winning home run for the Canadians this year. 

The Marietta, Georgia native is starting to display the power that led to him hit 66 collegiate homeruns at Columbus State. 

P-WILLY STYLE:

Peyton Williams broke a mini two game hitless streak to smack two doubles in yesterday’s 3-2 win. 

It’s the first time that the Johnston, Iowa native has doubled twice in a game this year. 

He may have had an RBI on his second double, but Je’Von Ward was forced to stay at third base after the line drive bounced over the wall for a ground rule double. 

The two hits gave Williams his 11th multi hit performance of the season. 

KEEPING PACE: 

Spokane won their fourth straight game over Everett last night to maintain a tie at the top of the Northwest League standings with the Canadians. 

The Indians have been the C’s kryptonite this season, winning 16 of 19 games across the first half. Since the Rockies affiliate clinched the first half title, if they were to win the second half as well, their championship opponent would come down to the next best overall record through the entire season. 

Entering play Saturday, 

Vancouver holds a three-game advantage over Eugene for the second-best overall record. 

HIT THE SLOPE: 

Pat Gallagher makes his 14th start of the season – and 2nd of the series – in Sunday’s finale. 

The Leominster, Massachusetts native spun just three innings on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits while punching out four Emeralds. 

He was pulled from the game after just 39 pitches to keep him fresh for his second start of the week. 

All told on the season, the former UConn Husky has a 4.86 ERA through 53.2 innings, striking out 46 while walking 17. 

Gallagher’s splitter has been his go-to pitch of late, as he’s thrown it more and more in recent starts to generate weak contact. Cesar Perdomo gets the ball for the Emerald
