Sean Whyte’s 42-yard field goal as time expired secured a dramatic 24-21 victory for the BC Lions over the Edmonton Elks at Save-On-Foods Field at BC Place on Saturday night.
Despite a game filled with ups and downs, the Lions managed to pull through in the final moments, thanks to Whyte’s clutch performance.
Vernon Adams Jr. and the Lions’ offense faced numerous challenges throughout the game. They struggled to find their rhythm, managing only a 13-12 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Lions’ only touchdown before their fourth-quarter rally came in the second quarter, courtesy of a pass to William Stanback.
David Mackie contributed to the offensive woes with a costly fumble at the goal line, nullifying a promising 98-yard drive.
Mackie later redeemed himself with a crucial one-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful two-point conversion catch by Justin McInnis, giving the Lions a temporary 21-18 lead.
Edmonton’s Dakota Prukop had earlier capitalized on penalties to score a touchdown, pushing the Elks ahead 18-13. A 52-yard field goal by Boris Bede tied the game at 21-21, setting the stage for Adams’ final drive.
With the help of a facemask penalty against Edmonton, Adams completed a key pass to Ayden Eberhardt and set up Whyte’s game-winning field goal with an eight-yard run by Stanback.
The Lions’ offense amassed 408 net yards, showcasing their ability to move the ball despite periods of inconsistency.
Sean Whyte remained perfect on the season, extending his streak to 11-for-11 in field goals and hitting 28 in a row dating back to last season.
The offensive line’s performance was notable, allowing zero quarterback sacks, which means Vernon Adams Jr. will have to keep his promise of buying team meals.
Eight different players recorded at least one reception, demonstrating the depth of the Lions’ receiving corps.
On the defensive side, the Lions secured two critical interceptions, with Ciante Evans and Garry Peters each making key plays to disrupt the Elks’ offense.
Vernon Adams Jr. had a solid performance, completing 27 of 38 passes for 331 yards and one touchdown, with no interceptions.
He showed no lingering issues from a previous abdominal strain, which bodes well for the Lions moving forward.
Ayden Eberhardt emerged as a key target, leading the team with 78 yards on seven receptions.
His ability to adapt and perform in multiple positions has been invaluable for the Lions, particularly in light of their injury struggles.
David Mackie expressed gratitude for the coaching staff’s confidence in him despite his earlier mistake mentioning “I felt reassured by being trusted in critical situations again” acknowledging the importance of having support from his coaches and teammates.
Vernon Adams Jr. praised the team’s fight and resilience but noted the need for continued improvement on offense. “We need to keep working hard and make sure we capitalize on our opportunities,” Adams stated.
He also commended Ayden Eberhardt for his versatility and focus, highlighting his contributions despite playing three different positions in three weeks due to injuries.
Sean Whyte was celebrated for his reliability in clutch situations mentioning “It’s great to have teammates who trust and believe in you,”
His consistent performance has been a cornerstone for the Lions’ success this season.
Linebacker Josh Woods will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, a significant blow to the Lions’ defensive unit.
However, there is positive news as Ben Hladik is set to return next week after undergoing a thumb procedure.
The Lions will enjoy a break over the Canada Day weekend before returning to practice on Tuesday. then hit the road for a game taking on the Tiger-Cats Sunday, July 9th at Tim Hortons Field scheduled for a 4 pm kickoff
