Taylor McQuillin and Sierra Hyland combined for a one hitter in Team Mexico’s 7-0 shutout win in the final game of the Americas Qualifier for Softball for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Saturday’s win over Canada secured one of the two births making this somewhat of a historical mark putting their sport on the world stage for Womens Fastpitch.
Mexico held a slim lead 2-0 over Cuba in the final game through two innings in a close game before breaking it open in the fourth inning scoring five times to make the final make the final winning by seven runs in a game shortened game.
Taylor McQiillin pitched the first four innings and was relieved by Sierra Hyland to completed the SO win over Cuba.
The bats got hot in the fifth as they secured win and led by Amanda Sanchez, Victoria Vidales, and Nicole Rangel each driving in a pair of rbi’s in the Mexican win and finished with strong momentum from the tournament knowing they were going to make their country proud heading into 2020.
Following the game we spoke with Dallas Escobedo (12), Mexico’s ace pitcher and she mentioned “It’s huge for the sport and growth of the game and by securing a spot at the Tokyo next year means recognition in the country for the sport and the women in the future in the sport of fast softball.”
Dallas attended Arizona State University graduating with a Business Degree and now works for Japan Toyota Industries Corporation located in Japan and plays pro ball for team Shining Vega where they reside year round.
We asked about sponsorship heading to 2020 Olympics and about the possibility for uniforms equipment to make this trip more successful.
She mentioned “This is huge for support from the Mexican Government financially to help the team with expenses in their Olympic journey of their dreams and the joy of the sport for the country.”
She continued “And brings attention to the sport for all the hard work that we have put in the game and possibilities in the future for women that want to play softball and and be successful as it grows.”
