With the final set to start and the building filling rapidly, this match-up has second place Walnut Grove take on the Terry Fox Ravens who are ranked 4th.
The Ravens were looking at winning the boards, while the Gators need to come up with three point shots, so we’ll see who sticks to the game plan.
It was obvious that the nerves played a huge factor for both teams due to the missed shots in the first two minutes, which saw Fox get the first basket 2 minutes in.
The first quarter was even with both teams trading baskets as well as leads, which ended up having Fox up by a 17-12 score after the first.
The lead changed hands 18 times, including 14 times in the second half alone.
Cohee for Walnut Grove set the tone with several great long passes keeping his team in the game.
The one thing this game has vs. others throughout the week is speed, quick crisp passes and a buzz in the building.
Fan support is essential to the success in our schools today and without the dedication of our teaching staff, this sport might just be a parking lot game.
While the first half was exceptional the second half needs more rebounding from Walnut Grove if they expect more points.
Pass for pass and basket for basket this game has everything the fans wanted to see and one can only expect to see a last shot win from either team.
The no-quit teams pressed and supplied everyone with an exciting night of basketball at the LEC in front of a huge crowd, with no numbers being mentioned.
This was the fourth meeting of the season between both clubs, which the Gators won the first three, which included a 82-64 win at the Fraser Valley semi-finals, which Walnut Grove led by over 30 points in the second half.
Using the school’s name sake it was interesting to watch the players touch a statue of Terry Fox each time the entered or left the game. At one point the Raven’s were trailing 72-63, but managed to get a 12-2 run effort from Crookes on a jumper.
Tanner Moss got an offensive rebound, giving them possession, but guard Jesse Crookes sank a 10 foot jumper shot with 3.4 seconds left putting Fox up 75-74. Fox fans swarmed the court and were requested to leave due to a foul, which hushed the crowd.
This win was the third in the history of the school an the first since winning back to back titles in 93-94.
New bench boss for Terry Fox, Steve Hanson replaced Rich Chambers at the start of the season, who made the trip to Victoria to become the head coach of the Women’s program.
Hanson was thrilled and at one point was speechless during the media scrum, but regained his composure to state “it’s unbelievable and I don’t know what just happened, but the guy’s pulled it off”.
This was the second straight year for AAA Boy’s High School Basketball at the LEC and from here it can only get better – but the question is HOW??
Senior Ryan Sclater was named the tournament MVP with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Point Guard Daniel Collins added 13 and Casey added 10 of his own.
