2019 Provincial Majors

The run for the playoffs for the 2019 Provincial Majors has four of the seven teams advancing to the championship run that as of press time has 22 preliminary game in the books.

The tournament comprised of seven teams all vying for the championship that saw host team Little Mountain, Hastings, Coquitlam, Dunbar, Highlands, Trail, and Layritz with the final cut after all preliminary game’s concluded.

Day 6 (Thursday) saw some exceptional ball played as Little Mountain defeat Highlands by a commanding score of 11-2 while Dunbar edge Coquitlam 3-2 and the day’s final game saw Hastings pull out a 9-0 win over Trail.

Day 7 (Friday) saw Layritz test Coquitlam losing 7-6 to the A’s that saw them head home to the Island knowing that they have work to do as they make plans to host the 2020 Nationals Majors.

Friday’s other games saw Hastings defeat Highlands by a 4-0 score while the night cap feature game saw Little Mountain defeated Dunbar 4-1, in what many listed as a shock. 

Heading into the semifinals Saturday will decide the two final teams playing for this years championship with the winner heading to Ancaster Ontario representing BC at the National Championship.

The week long championship saw the highest level of ball played by all teams on the diamond who entertained the many fans in attendance.

Saturday’s semi-finals match has Division 1 host Little Mountain play cross town rival Dunbar at noon, while the other semi-final set for 3 pm has Hasting play Coquitlam, with the winners of both games advancing to the championship at  noon on Sunday.

The host Little Mountain has 60-70 Volunteers that are assisting (donating) their time while the grounds crew have been busy all week keeping the diamond in excellent condition.

The Umpires working the tournament are from Districts 1 through 7, with and a couple from Victoria and two from Trail.

On a more pleasant note it was interesting to note that Coquitlam A’s Matthew Shanley belted 9 home runs to win the home run derby.

He was awarded a bat for the win and donated it back to the Little Mountain organization to give to a player.
