UBC Sports Action

This past weekend saw the UBC Thunderbirds capture a successful sports weekend for the sports teams that eventually resulted in a championship for the Men’s Soccer team, in addition to good results for Basketball and Volleyball which helped in the National rankings for the school.

In Soccer; the Men’s won their 12th title with a 1-0 win over Cape Breton in a game that was played at Quebec City at the CIS Championships.

This marked another championship for the T-Birds and saw them end the season without a single loss in conference play going 11-0-3 plus the Canada West playoffs 2-0 and at nationals 3-0.

It is the team’s first undefeated, national championship-winning season since 1994, the year of Mosher’s first CIS title.

The UBC Women’s Volleyball the team won in straight sets over Saskatchewan by scores of 25-12, 25-11, and 25-13. The win see’s UBC improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Huskies drop to 1-5.In Basketball action both the Men’s and Women’s teams opened the season with a sweep over Thompson Rivers Friday night with the Women pulling off a 75-71 Saturday and Saturday by a 72-70 victory improving their record to 2-0 on the season.

Thompson Rivers fell to 0-2 and the next action for the ladies is the Fraser Valley on Friday (16th) and Saturday (17th) at War Memorial Gym beginning at 6:00 pm both nights.

The men’s team also opened with back to back wins to start the season over Thompson Rivers with a 82-70 win Friday and a dominating performance Saturday 97-63.

Next up for the T-Birds is Fraser Valley on Friday (16th) and Saturday (17th). Both games immediately follow the Women’s games at 8:00pm at War Memorial Gym.

In Ice Hockey the T-Birds travelled to Mount Royal and swept their opponents in both games by scores of 7-2 and 3-2; improving their record to 6-3-1 on the year giving them third place in CIS Canada West Standings. They return home November 16th and 17th taking on the Manitoba Bisons and both games at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre game time 7:00pm.

The Women’s team next action at home is November 23rd and 24th also at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre. Game times are 7:00pm on both nights.

SFU Men’s Hockey

The SFU team returns to the Ice on 17th of November when they take on the TWU at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre at 7:00pm.
