Our own SDSS Football Team went on a road trip to the University of Idaho for a valuable experience at an advanced football development camp.

“Our three days in Idaho complemented our off-season training program. It will support achieving our ultimate goal of winning the Provincial Championship at BC Place.” said Coach Mike Emery, a former player at UBC and the CFL, and SDSS Sun Devils linebacker coach.

Players and several coaches took the bus to the U of Idaho for this 3-day training camp with the University of Idaho Vandals, an NCAA Division 1 Football Program.

“This incredible experience fostered team building, character, grit, skills development, and an opportunity to play against highly competitive US high schools,” said Coach Mike. “Most importantly, not only does a camp like this enhance player development, but also benefits the coaching team in terms of learning from NCAA Division 1 coaches”.

Along with the coaching expertise, the Vandals have outstanding training facilities, and according to Sun Devils Coach Mike, it includes “first-class team film classrooms, weight rooms and training centre, dorms, and cafeterias. But what struck us the most was the domed stadium built specifically for football”.

Mike went on to say that, “After talking with the Idaho coaches, they commented that some of the Sun Devils could potentially play at the next level, and feedback from players was extremely positive. We believe this experience will help the team achieve their ultimate goal of being provincial champions.”

South Delta Secondary (SDSS) Sun Devils Senior Varsity team is in the top level BC Division AAA, comprised of grades 11 & 12.

The SDSS Junior Varsity program is made up of grades 8, 9 and 10, and competed in the BC Provincial Champion game last year.

The Sun Devils play in the Western Conference along with Vancouver College, Notre Dame, Handsworth, Belmont, and Carson Graham.

“The Western Conference”, said Coach Mike, “is highly competitive, and includes some of the top teams in BC”.

What’s next for the South Delta Sun Devils? Their 3-week Training camp starts in August, and the season begins with an exhibition game & BBQ at GW Graham in Chilliwack on August 29.

Delta fans will be interested in the Delta Championship between the SDSS Sun Devils and Seaquam Seahawks at John Oliver field on Sept. 20/21.

The time will be announced shortly.
