Locally our hometown “boys of summer” are currently playing their home games in Hillsboro and were on a run with a respectable winning streak, which like all good things – had to come to an end.

So as to help the C’s and keep baseball fans up to date we will continue to post the game write-up sent to us by Tyler Zickel, the new Vancouver Canadians Play by Play/Media Relations person.

Enjoy the read:

The Vancouver Canadians brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth but failed to score as their historic winning streak ended after eight games with a 4-3 loss to the Hillsboro Hops (Diamondbacks) Friday night.

Trailing 4-1 to start the final frame, Ryan Gold led off the inning with a double to the right field corner. Up stepped Tanner Morris, who launched one over right field collecting his first HR of the season making it 4-3.

Sebastian Espino worked a two-out walk later in the inning putting the tying run that put Spencer Horwitz on base but unfortunately a ground-out ended the game; snapping the win streak.

Both traded solo HR’s in the first two innings that saw Andy Yerzy go deep with two outs in the top of the first, but Gold managed his first Advanced-A HR around the left field foul pole in the second, tying the game at one.

Hillsboro used two hits, two walks and six stolen bases which included a steal at home by Ricky Martinez which proved to be the winning run – to plate three in the seventh and take a 4-1 lead.

Right-hander Dallas native Nick Fraze went six innings, allowing one run on three hits, walked two and struck out six for his second start (six or more innings, three earned runs or less) of the season but did not factor into the decision.

Three hitters accounted for Vancouver’s five hits. Gold and Morris paced the offense with two hits apiece, while Cameron Eden singled in the fourth.

Marcus Reyes worked an inning and a third of scoreless relief. Cobi Johnson (L, 0-1) couldn’t escape the seventh after two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

These two teams go head-to-head Saturday night with #9 Blue Jays prospect (MLB.com) Adam Kloffenstein (1-0, 0.71 ERA) climbs the hill for the Canadians, while the Hops send Diamondback farmhand Matt Tabor #23 (1-1, 4.91 ERA).

Sunday’s afternoon contest saw the C’s manage a 5-4 win taking the six-game series four games to two which was listed as “The Battle for the Boro.”

A three-run ninth nearly spoiled an otherwise terrific Sunday afternoon, but the Vancouver Canadians held on to beat the Hillsboro Hops (Diamondbacks) 5-4 and take the six-game series four games to two in the first edition of “The Battle for the ‘Boro.”

The C’s were up 5-1 at the start of the final frame, which saw them send Will McAffer (RH) to the hill recording the last three outs but only retired one batter while putting a total of four men aboard via three walks, but the C’s never started scoring until the fifth.

Hops starter Drey Jameson (L, 0-2) cruised through four but not until Spencer Horwitz led off with a single on the first pitch of the inning advancing to second on a wild pitch scoring when Luis De Los Santos singled to center.

After a Sebastian Espino double put runners on second and third, Ronny Brito worked the count full and fouled off a couple of two-strike pitches before lifting a sacrifice fly to centerfield that made it 2-0.

Right-hander Paxton Schultz (W, 2-0) turned in his best outing since joining the Blue Jays via trade in early May. Schultz, 23, earned a quality start in which he went six innings, allowed no runs on two hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out five.

Both teams scored a run in the seventh when the C’s put two men on with consecutive singles before a dropped pop fly in shallow CF allowed a run to score on the error that saw Hillsboro spoil the SO in the home half after a lead-off double, a two-out walk and an RBI single from Reece Hampton.

Vancouver returns to action Tuesday as the home team playing against the Mariners farm team the Everett AquaSox at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro.
