It took 106 minutes of soccer to determine a winner but the Simon Fraser University men’s soccer team are headed to the third round of the NCAA Tournament after a 2-1 victory over first ranked Cal-State Los Angeles on Saturday night.
The score was tied for over 36 minutes at 1-1 before Carlo Basso (Coquitlam) netted the game winner in the 106th minute when he took a cross from Chris Bargholz (Fuessen, Germany) and made no mistake, scoring the game winner.
The two sides played a close first half, with both teams recording two shots on goal and neither scoring to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at 0-0 at halftime.
Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam) gave the Clan the lead in the 55th minute when he scored on a header off a long throw in from Colin Jacques (Richmond).
The lead would last 15 minutes as Jordan Payne knotted the match at one when he scored on a shot that beat Clan goalkeeper Brandon Watson (Victoria) in the 70th minute.
Watson made three saves in the match to earn the win for the Clan.
The win improves the Clan’s record to 17-2-1 on the season. The NCAA Tournament will continue for SFU next week when the Clan travel to Denver, CO to face the number two ranked team in the West Region, the UC San Diego Tritons.
