PWHL Continues To Grow

Growth normally takes years to work out and it’s likely that the news of expansion on the west coast has been on the table for a couple of years now it was made official.

Locally everyone’s attention seems to be focused on the most recent news on the newest expansion PWHL franchise in Vancouver which will draw record numbers for those wanting to watch Women’s hockey continue to grow.

Last season’s championship was won by Quebec that saw Brandon winning Silver and Calgary taking home Bronze with all teams looking at making changes for the coming season focused on advancing to the 2025 championship.

This year’s championship had six teams competing that had teams venturing to Chilliwack all coming from Kamloops to North Van in hopes of pulling off a championship win.

Sportswave again did the live stream for the league and had many exceptional comments from players, parents as well as messages from as far away as Australia.

The championship wrapped up which was followed by the news that the PWHL would be expanding to Vancouver starting play this fall with the PNE as their home rink and the Coliseum as their practice facility.

The Vancouver franchise will be the seventh team added to the PWHL to begin play with the 2025-26 season.

Let’s not forget that the game in Vancouver drew an attendance of 19,038 excited fans that saw the game played during the week – impressive!!

As if that wasn’t enough the following week the PWHL released the news that Seattle would be also getting an expansion franchise and the eighth team added to the PWHL beginning play in

2025-26 and playing out of the Climate Pledge Arena

Full credit to the PWHL to continue to grow the league and the sport for the future of the game and mainly for the young girls that are playing competitive women’s hockey in arenas from coast to coast.

To date from what we hear no team names have yet to be announced but if the league wants to grow the sport both city teams should have a contest for young female hockey players with the winner given a four (yes four) season tickets for the coming year.

What a great way in which to grow the sport and boy has it come a long way since 1977 and if you want to know the significance of 1977 catch up with me and I’ll let you know over coffee.

To date there has been nothing further announced regarding camp or additional hirings for the team but when there is a release we’ll keep you posted.

Congratulations to both franchises and we wish them all the best!!!
