Luge World Cup

The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), John Weston, Member of Parliament (West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country), today announced the Government of Canada’s contribution to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada in support of the 2011 2nd Viessmann Luge World Cup.
“Our Government, through Sport Canada’s Hosting Program, is proud to provide support to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada for the 2nd Viessmann Luge World Cup,” said Minister of State Gosal. “We have seen our Canadian lugers excel on this track during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and they will continue their pursuit of excellence as we host the world’s top Luge athletes at this exciting competition.” “Once again the Whistler Sliding Centre, a sport legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, will host the world’s fastest athletes,” said Mr. Weston.
“I congratulate the organizers and thank the volunteers for showcasing this venue and our spectacular region to the rest of the world.” “The Government of Canada has played a critical role in developing Canadian Luge athletes from participants into medal winners through its investment in the Own the Podium program, and by contributing to the staging of major events,” said Tim Farstad, Executive Director and Canadian Luge Association.

The 2nd Viessmann Luge World Cup will be hosted by the Canadian Luge Association in conjunction with an organizing committee.

The Viessmann Luge World Cup is held every year and attracts 136 athletes from 19 countries.
The event helps determine athletes’ world ranking.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium.

A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada for the 2011 2nd Viessmann Luge World Cup through Sport Canada’s Hosting Program.
The Government of Canada also committed $2.8 million in 2011-2012 to Bobsleigh Luge Skeleton Canada through the Sports Support Program.
