Lions In The Community

The BC Lions are heavily involved in the community and recently they took the traveling players on the road.

They hit numerous primary schools in the lower mainland as well as some on Vancouver Island and if the youngsters are any indication of the success they have, you saw it at the schools.

They attended Pebble Hill in Tsw and got a warm welcome and both JR LaRose and Rolly Lumbala were great with the youngsters and were just like kids themselves.

Playing games and interacting was a thrill to watch and not only were we surprised, I personally think the Teachers were as well.

The event was sponsored by Fortis BC and for the most part was a “teaching’ session on about becoming Energy Efficient or Energy Champions for the future of the World.

They spent well over an hour with the youngsters and there was never a dull moment during the entire presentation.

Now entering its fifth season, the FortisBC Energy Champions program is designed specifically for children in kindergarten through grade seven, emphasizing the importance of environmental responsibility and being an ‘Energy Champion’.

In 2012, the initiative visited 75 elementary schools throughout British Columbia, inspiring more than 22,000 students to play an active role in reducing their environmental footprint.

Launched in 2011,
Be More Than a Bystander breaks the silence surrounding violence against women and girls by providing tools, language and practical ideas about how to be more than a bystander, how to speak up and how to communicate that violence and abuse is not acceptable.

The Be More Than a Bystander program is made possible with the generous support of Founding Partners:

The Government of Canada, BC Ministry of Children and Family Development and Encana Corporation;
Supporting Partner:

BC Federation of Labour and Municipal Partners:

City of Vancouver and City of Surrey.

Meanwhile Head Coach is returning fresh off his visit to the Senior Bowl in Alabama and no doubt the Lions Head Coach Mike Benevides will scouting the area for future BC Lions.

In addition he spent time at the Variety’s 48th annual Show of Hearts Telethon and was very well received by everyone.

It’s a chance for the father of two to give back to the community before his waking hours become occupied fulltime with football.

“It’s always on my mind to try and get out there and volunteer my time to some worthwhile causes and the Variety Telethon is a great fit for me,” says Benevides.

Dating back to 1965, Variety – The Children’s Charity has raised more than $170 million for children with special needs in British Columbia.

In 2013, the charity brought in an amazing $7.1 million which is used to purchase much-needed high-tech equipment.

“The network of volunteers that Variety has established has really had a positive impact on their ability to focus the vast majority of their fundraising  proceeds on the kids that need it most,” adds Benevides.

“As a father of two, it makes me very proud to help try and make a difference in the lives of both kids and parents.”
