The Canadian women’s volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Colombia on Thursday at the Universiade in Gwangju and the win will see the team play for fifth place against China.
“We are very excited to finish our tournament with a game against China,” said head coach Olivier Trudel. “Playing for fifth is a great accomplishment for our team, which didn’t have a lot of international experience. It sends a message to the rest of the world.”
Against Colombia, the Canadians closed out the match in just 66 minutes. Attacker Danielle Brisebois (UBC) counted 11 kills and a block. “Meg Casault (University of Alberta) had another strong game and was very steady on service, reception and defence,” noted Trudel. “At setter, Katie Forcier (University of Montreal) made it look easy on attack. She did a great job of executing the game plan.”
Canada will face China on Friday at 3 p.m. (2 a.m. ET) and they are assured of finishing (at least) as high as its sixth place finish in Kazan two years ago.
If the team wins the fifth place match, it will be the best finish for Canada since the 4th place of 1997 in Sicily, Italy.
