Retirement is not only hard to predict, but hard to understand why some chose to retire in the prime of their career, while others might hang on.

One such individual is Delta hockey player David Rutherford (30) who announced his retirement over the summer from hockey and the Belfast Giants, now see’s him suiting up for the same squad.

He spent the previous two seasons in Belfast and chose to move back to Delta (Canada) following the end of last season.

While there he helped them (Belfast Giants) secure a second place finish and a spot in the Playoff Finals.

Retirement was fine and he was spending his time assisting various teams, one being the Surrey Eagles, but it’s hard to keep him from playing competitive.

Following a recent 10 game road swing Giants Head Coach Adam Keefe worked either magic or is a convincing talker that has managed to bring the fan favourite back to Belfast.

David Rutherford originally arrived in Belfast  to play for the Giants in January 2016 previously playing for the Edinburgh Capitals when the Giants (we are hearing) interrupted a move seeing him play in the East Coast Hockey League.

David managed to notch 21 goals and 29 assists (50 points) in 53 games for 50 points in the 2015/16 season, that included 18 points with the Giants.

“When the opportunity came up to bring David Rutherford back to Belfast – the decision was pretty simple. He has already won championships in his career and he will play a huge part down the stretch this season.”

“David has put up good numbers in Belfast over the last two years and and I know our fans will love seeing him in a Giants jersey once again.”
