Golf is a sport for those wishing to relax or those who are strung out letting go of frustrations at home, work or life in general, then there are those who are the true Golfers.

The one’s that can’t or won’t lose and if they do, heaven forbid the sky will fall, but for the Pro PGA players it’s a game of different sort and given the demise of “Tiger” of late, the sport are looking for a new legend on and off the “Green.”

Enter Mackenzie Hughes of small town Canada and one in which many have never heard of called Dundas Ontario who celebrates his 26th birthday November 23rd.

He is a graduate of Kent State University and won the Canadian Amateur Championship in 2011 and 2012 respectfully.

He was on the Canadian National Team for three years and eventually turned pro competing on the eGolf Pro Tour and the PGA Tour Canada, playing in the2012 and 2013 Canadian Open events, narrowly missing the cut in both events.

mackenzieHe was the first rookie in 20 years to go stroke to putt with an impressive finish as he had an opportunity to end it with his final 10 foot birdie putt in darkness on the 18th hole.

While the rest of the field was on the course the next day, he (Mackenzie) was watching from a distance knowing that each putt missed by other golfers gave him a closer chance for the title.

With him pulling off the win it now elevates his game so as to attend the Masters, which is one event that ever elite golfer only dreams of and in past years the only other Canadian to wear the Green Jacket in 2003 was Bright’s Grove Ontario’s Mike Weir.

He mentioned to the media that he had received a text message from Mike offering works of encouragement and focus as he was entering the final day, which for Mackenzie was more motivation – if ever it was needed.

The win is his firth PGA Tour start winning the RSM Classic becoming the first Canadian-born golfer to win on the PGA Tour since Winnipeg’s Nick Taylor won at the 2014 Sanderson Farms Championship.
