The circuit ended up taking riders around an artificial island called “The Pearl” that saw the Junior Women completing a ride of one lap (13.7 kilometers) and the Under-23 Men completing two full laps for a distance of 28.9 kilometers.
Victoria’s Laurie Jussaume and Erin Attwell completed in what was their first world championships.
Attwell had an exceptional strong start sitting in 25th at the first split, but eventually tailed off towards the end, finishing 27th overall.
Jussaume had a somewhat slower start managing 28th at the half but managed to record the 22nd fastest time for the second half of the race finishing 25th.
Netherlands rider Karlijn Swinkels eventually went on to win the world title. Attwell stated “I was hoping for a top-15 today and that didn’t happen and I think the weather played a big role.”
She continued “The course was pretty technical and I did my best to pick the best lines. I’m happy with how I
rode and did to the best of my ability and I just didn’t have the legs today for a top-15.” The Under-23 Men’s race saw two riders from Canada; Cowan and Sean MacKinnon of Hamilton.
MacKinnon rode a consistent race and was 19th after the first lap, improving to 16th by the finish.
Cowan had a slower build-up in his ride; 34th at the first split, 22nd by the end of the first lap and continuing to improve through the second lap, to finish 12th.
The overall champion was Germany’s Marco Mathis who was only the second rider to start and held the lead through the entire field.
The Road World Championships continue until Sunday, with the Junior Men and Elite Women time trials taking place on Tuesday.
