Two weeks the streets of Delta will be humming with the sound of tires hitting the pavement with more than 200 professional cyclists from North America taking to the streets in the lower mainland.

The Lower Mainland attracts many of Canada’s riders all taking part in what is termed as the biggest professional road cycling series, known as BC Superweek.

First race off the line has the riders compete in the $25,000 Tour de Delta presented by Beedie.

The event covers all three areas of Delta (North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen) as shown “live” only on Delta TV which I am pleased to be a part of.

BC Superweek Series Director Mark Ernsting tells the media “Year after year, the communities of are incredibly welcoming to all the teams and cyclists to open BC Superweek. It’s also wonderful to see the collaboration between the City of Delta, local businesses, and community members continues to grow year after year with the Tour de Delta.”

The first race in Delta takes off July 6th (Friday) in North Delta in front of the Delta Police and Fire Department followed by the the second race Saturday over the streets in the center Ladner.

The Tour de Delta wraps up in Tsawwassen as the UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Race finishes in what many call a the marquis event.

Let’s give credit where it’s due as this was the “brainchild’ of former NDP MLA Guy Genter who at that time was on Delta Council.

His vision continues to this day beginning in 2001 with the first race attracting over 200 cyclists from around the globe.

Delta’s current Mayor Lois Jackson mentions “For the past 17 years, our Tour de Delta has attracted cyclists and spectators from Canada and around the world.”

She continued “It is a significant summer attraction for our community and acts as an excellent ambassador for sport and thanks to the incredible athletes, City of Delta staff and all the wonderful volunteers.  We are looking forward to this year’s Tour de Delta being the best yet!”

The UCI-sanctioned White Spot/Delta Road Races gives fans and future Olympic cyclists an up close and personal opportunity to see elite pro athletes represent their respective countries.

Team Canada Men and Women are looking to accumulate points in the standings advancing their careers.

Mark Ernsting continued “The White Spot/Delta Road Race is an incredible chance to see teams and cyclists who have come from all over Canada, the United States, and around the world to compete. It’s the only UCI-certified road race in British Columbia and we’re thrilled to have it as part of the Tour de Delta and BC Superweek.”

Now known as BC Superweek this is currently Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series featuring over $140,000 in prize money with nine races over ten days.

Mark the date on your calendar as BC Superweek hits the pavement and runs from July 6 – 15 and consists of the following race area’s.

  • July 6-8 Tour de Delta (presented by Beedie)
  • July 10th New West Grand Prix
  • July 11th Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix
  • July 12th Giro di Burnaby (presented by Appia Development)
  • July 13th PoCo Grand Prix (presented by Dominion Lending Centres)
  • July 14-15 Tour de White Rock (presented by Landmark Premiere Properties)

Sportswave wishes all the riders and their teams success and a safe week of racing in the lower mainland.
