In a move that many at the local coffee shops are questioning, it’ll either work out or simply be yet another move that won’t work out for theVancouver Canucks.
Anyone who watched the playoffs saw Evander Kane (33 6’2”, 218lbs at times on the ice but playing his normal undisciplined style of play clearly cost the Oilers goals.
If you think this is his first time in the sin bin – think again given his undisciplined style of play it’ll either cost the Canucks or might work out if someone sits him down and has a long chat with him
HIs time with the Vancouver Giants fit his and the Giants style of play which was rough, tumble which at times worked to intimidate all visiting opponents visiting Vancouver since the 2006-07 season with the G-men.
Some are saying that he was a “cancer in the dressing room” but that alone remains to be out in the open but it’s well known that he is involved off the ice with various charities, helped out with disadvantaged kids and works with the Indigenous community in Northern Alberta.
Maybe his time in Edmonton wasn’t a prime fit for Evander and given his aggressive play just maybe it’s what the Canucks are needing and have been missing out the past while.
He is coming off the regular season in which he did not play due to injuries which were two hip adductor muscles, two hernias as well as two lower abdominal muscles which put him out of the line-up for the season.
The surgeries both this past September and January 9,following his return for Game 2 of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Kings.
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin made it official by announcing that Evander Kane is now a member of the Canucks that saw them acquire him from the Oilers for a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
The fourth-round pick originally belonged to the Senators that saw them transfer it to Edmonton July 15, 2024, before Vancouver acquired it from the Oilers August 18, 2024.
Allvin mentioned “Evander is a physical power forward who will add some much-needed size and toughness to our group.”
He continued “We like the way he wins puck battles along the boards and handles himself in the dirty areas in front of the net. Evander moves well around the ice and has proven to be a productive goal scorer in the National Hockey League. We are excited to bring him back home to Vancouver and our staff looks forward to working with him this coming season.”
Kane (33) played in 21 playoff games with the Edmonton Oilers in 2024.25, collecting 12 points (6-6-12), 44 PIM’s and a +4 plus/minus rating, considering that he missed the regular season and was recovering from injury.
He has played 930 career regular season games that were split with Atlanta, Winnipeg, Sabres, Sharks, and Oilers, finishing with 617 points (326-291-617) and 1186 penalty minutes.
He also played in 97 playoff games managing 55 points (32-23-55) that helped the Oilers appear in consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances.
He has also represented Canada on the International stage in the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament that saw them win Gold, the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships, also winning Gold, and the 2010, 2011, and 2012 World Championships.
Kane was originally selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the first round, fourth overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
While many question the signing given his “temper” at times that sees him take undisciplined penalties but if he can control this he’ll be a valuable addition to the Canucks.
Thanks to the Canucks for the press release!!
