No different that the song by Willie Nelson on “On The Road Again”, this time it’s Mike Benevides who is quite possibly moving to the City of Regina.
Mike won two Grey Cup as the Defensive Coordinator of the BC Lions and now it is rumored that the Saskatchewan Roughriders are hoping he might just join the Green Machine!
Sources tell me that the Riders have offered Mike their defensive coordinator post and I also hear that he is considering the position, but quite likely won’t make a decision until the new year.
He still (to the best of my understanding) is living in South Surrey and no doubt the Riders are quite likely to remain patient until he thinks things over and is willing to take his next big step in the CFL.
Benevides was released as the Head Coach of the BC Lions in November, following the playoff loss in Montreal.
For the time being Richie Hall was Saskatchewan’s Defensive Coordinator last season and currently remains on the Riders staff for the time being.
Hall was demoted at the end of the 2014 season in Regina and we hear that he is in the running for the position in Winnipeg for the Coordinator job with the Bombers.
Benevides may not be the only member of last season’s Lions staff that may be headed to Saskatchewan.
It is expected that his (Benevides) Offensive Coordinator; Khari Jones, may return as QB Coach.
With the Lions hiring Jeff Tedford as the new Head Coach, it is unlikely Jones will return to Lions for the 2015 season.
All the best to Mike and Family.
