The first ever BC “AAA” Championship was played in 1946 and won by Vancouver College and were coached by Br. Neylon which saw them win again in 1946.
The 2010 Championship was won by White Rock Christian who were coached by John Dykstra and are looking for a repeat, but only time will tell.
The move is not easily understood by many in the basketball circles, but is one that could add to the overall growth of the program for years to come.
This being the 66th Annual is in memory of Roger Morrow who passed away in December/10. Roger was a true ambassador for High School basketball in the Province.
He started at a young age and played in the old Vancouver Basketball Commission during his junior day’s, then for Magee as well as Ryerson (1955) United Church and while at Ryerson, he agreed to be the coach.
His passing leaves a void in the program, and it is hoped that someone can pick-up the ball and sink a “three-pointer” for the overall win for the future of the game.
The media conference was a huge success with tribute being paid to past championship teams, which far too many sports often fail to recognize.
Basketball understands the concept of “why” and embraces this.
In conversation with John Buis he told me “the media are giving great coverage for us and for this we thank them” He continues “the crowd are getting larger game by game and it’s unfortunate that all games can’t be played when everyone finishes work”.
I am told that the favorite entering the event is RC Palmer coached by Paul Eberhardt, who’s Dad also played in this event – albeit years back.
Mid-Thursday saw Pitt Meadows take on Terry Fox in a crucial match-up.
Pitt Meadows have a center standing 6’7″ while Terry Fox has a forward standing 6’6″. Size wise they both match-up even on the court.
Pitt Meadows managed to bring a large crowd of supporters to the game, with most dressed in green to recognize St. Patties day.
