While many in Canada are concerned how the “J'” will do this upcoming season for those on Canada’s west coast, it’s nice to see the Mariners making news with some signings.

It’s reported that Canada’s team on the west coast the Seattle Mariners have reached terms with left-hander Drew Smyly and outfielder Jarrod Dyson after acquiring them both earlier this month.

These are only two of their arbitration-eligible players and the others include Danny Valencia, Jean Segura, Leonys Martin and starting pitcher James Paxton as well as relievers Evan Scribner and Nick Vincent.

Last season while with Tampa Bay Smyly went 7-12 with a 4.88 ERA but that was only the first time in five seasons he finished with an ERA over 4.00.

Dyson was with the Royals last season was acquired in a deal with Kansas City and hit .278 with 30 stolen bases.

It’s reported that all eight (8) players were under team control for 2017, but the amount they are to be paid wasn’t finalized until earlier in the day.

Valencia and Dyson are in their third and final years of arbitration eligibility, while Segura, Martin, Smyly and Scribner are second-year arb-eligible.

This means that they’ll remain under team control for one more season (2018) before becoming free agents in 2019.

Vincent and Paxton are first-year arbitration-eligible and Paxton is listed as being a Super Two qualifier.

Players are eligible for arbitration after they’ve acquired at least three years and fewer than six years of Major League service time.

The exception to that is the Super Two qualifiers as is James Paxton become eligible a year earlier because they’re in the top 22 percent in terms of players with at least two and fewer than three years of service time.

Great news for Mariners fans as well as Paxton supporters!
