True Sport today confirmed the names of the three winners of the 2013 True Sport Give-Back Challenge, and the details of their entries, as selected through a public online voting process.
Canadians from coast to coast to coast had three days to submit their online votes for their favourite of eight finalists in this year’s challenge.
“Polycourons Terry Fox” by École Secondaire La Découverte in St-Léonard-d’Aston, Quebec, received 33 percent of the total votes and the top prize of $3,000.
Sharing Terry Fox’s dream of finding a cure for cancer, the event organizers raised and donated $6,703 for cancer research.
In total, 1,115 runners came together from five secondary schools and 13 elementary schools in the area, along with members of the community.
“’Polycourons Terry Fox’ is an excellent example of how good sport can make a great difference,” said Karri Dawson, Director of Ethical Sport Operations, Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. “It’s amazing to think that over the course of four years, this event has donated nearly $24,000 to cancer research. École Secondaire La Découverte, and its community, understand the meaning of giving back and have clearly demonstrated their commitment.”
“Community Cup CHASE” by the Catholic Centre for Immigrants in Ottawa, Ontario, earned 24 per cent of the votes and the second place prize of $2,000.
The all-day urban adventure race was designed to engage Ottawa newcomers and City of Ottawa staff members in various sporting challenges.
This volunteer-based event showcased the inclusive power of sport and its ability to break down barriers.
“Team Nicaragua Bound 2013” by the West Ottawa Soccer Club in Ottawa, Ontario, received 19 per cent of the votes and a prize of $1,000.
As a two-time True Sport Give Back Challenge recipient, the West Ottawa Soccer Club took the principle of giving back to a whole new level by raising over $15,000 to help build a school in Nicaragua.
Members of the team not only raised money through various fundraisers over the spring and summer of 2013, but also took a life-changing trip to Nicaragua to help build the school.
“The submissions we received for the fourth annual True Sport Give-Back Challenge were incredibly inspiring,” said Dawson. “The creativity, enthusiasm and spirit of good sport was captured by all participants.
The True Sport Give-Back Challenge provides True Sport members with an opportunity to give back to their communities by volunteering their time or hosting an event and donating the proceeds to a local charity or cause.
Winners of the True Sport Give-Back Challenge were announced on CBC’s live broadcast of RBC Sports Day in Canada on November 30. RBC Sports Day in Canada is presented by ParticipACTION, CBC and True Sport.
